For reasons I do not understand, the default behavior here, and in LaTeX, is
that (), [], {}, <> _not_ scale
to their contents. Since I always want my brackets to look decent, I always
want them to scale with
contents. I have tried to figure out when one wouldn't want this to happen and
failed. I suggest
therefore that the default behavior be to scale and the extra-work behavior be
to not scale. That is, I
suggest that the behaviors of \left(\right) and () be reversed. I know this
will probably cause
screaming fits at first as everyone has to learn new behavior, but in the long
run it seems much saner. I
am getting awfully tired of typing \left and \right and all the space and
muddle for reading they cause.

Alternatively, if someone understands why the to me counterintuitive default is
a good idea, please
explain it to me. I'm thoroughly stumped and assume it "just growed" that way.

Thanks.
