I was not able to reproduce this behavior. The master worked for me.
I used oO v. 3.0 on Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Service Pack 2.

Here are the steps I took in an attempt to reproduce:

* Create presentation from empty presentation
  * 2
      * Select slide design: Blue and Red Gradient
      * Select an output medium: Screen
      * Preview checkbox selected
  * 3
      * Select a slide transition:
          * Effect: No Effect
          * Speed: Medium
      * Select the presentation type
          * Default
      * Preview checkbox selected

* Slide 1 (blank), default blank-layout selected
* Select title layout
* Enter text on slide
* Save-as

* Add new slide, default layout is title layout
* Change layout to Title, Text
* Add text

* Select Slide Master view from View menu
* Change title text format to BOLD
* Select Second Outline Level text and change to Courier New (from Thorndale)
* OBSERVATION: Text for all lines below change to Courier New as well (BUG?)
* Save

* "Re-open" - does this mean go back to the slide view, or close the file and
re-open the file?
* Change view back to "Normal" the slides look right to me (changed font is
correct, can view the slides) (bug not reproduced)

* Select Slide Master View, change Second Outline Level text back to Thorndale
* Close and save (dialogue asking to save appeared after hitting "X" in upper
right)

* Re-open slide show
* Thorndale is the text, master is applied (bug not reproduced)
