Create a blank presentation 2. In the Layout panel on the right, select "Title, Text" (second row from the top, on the left) 3. Select the text box (not the title) such that the green handlers appear The Format Paintbrush option is greyed out after these steps. Format Paintbrush is consistently available for Title objects in each template, but it does not work for other objects. The only exception is the text box in the Title Slide template (first row, on the right of the Templates panel), for which the green handlers do appear. As Nabeel pointed out, newly created text objects (generated by using the shape toolbar on the bottom of the screen) only have Format Paintbrush active until another object is created. Clicking on the new text object after creating a different object will result in a greyed out text box. Note that by following the same reproduction steps in Microsoft PowerPoint 2003, I am able to use the Format Painter on text boxes and other non-title objects.
