Instead it depends on the font providing the Mac-specific "prop" table (http://developer.apple.com/textfonts/TTRefMan/RM06/Chap6prop.html) and the glyph properties being set properly for every glyph. This table is usually not even available in third-party fonts, especially not for fonts targeted at other platforms.
