Installation Notes about my update from 3-00 to 3-01 on 2/11/2009 in Win Vista
Home Prem on HP/CPQ Presario 2.8ghz, 3 gig ram, dual processor.

Please note that my upgrade to 3.01 was different, in that I got no dialog for
(custom) feature choices [like when I upgraded from 2.4 to 3.00] and no Java
installing dialog!

But it extracted a 151mbyte fileset directory on my desktop and then ran a >3
minute "Configuring OOP" dialog which counted down. At 54 seconds left (took
more than 54 seconds to finish) it stayed there displaying 54 for over 30
seconds and then displayed 43 seconds left, [strange] and took more than 43
seconds. That dialog disapeared and then setup "went quiet" without seeing a
typical "copying files" or "installing Openoffice" dialog and finally,
no "succesfully finished" or official end dialog box saying "Completed
update" "Installation has completed succesfully" "Start OpenOffice" or
whatever. It ran overall 4-5 minutes.

So I waited 5 more mins (expecting setup was running in the backround and was
working [without seeing an hourglass cursor, though]). So I started "Writer"
manually and checked "About" and it was at 3.01!!! (I looked b4 upgrade it was
at 3.00) So setup seemed to do a short update, rather than the usual full blown
install I have seen many times before. This is not really a problem except that
there was no info from the setup program to let me know what to expect!
For example "If you are upgrading from 3.00 to 3.01 you will see a short
process and x,y,z if you are upgading from pre ver 3.00 you should see a full
install sequence. If this is your first install you will be asked to do a
generic install or a custom install [to tailor your user experience], we
recommend generic", type of verbiage.
This is my main reason to report to the "OOP project" today.

Also note setup did not self delete the desktop fileset directory, I had to do
it manually.

A comment: Verbose wording is crucial when you great folks are doing your Help
files, dialogs and setup routines!
I also suggest to ask users to send in generic unidentifying creations and put
them on the website in a section "What I made with OpenOffice" and a tips
section, so others can download files [for others and beginners to use and/or
learn from], because seeing and studying is better than "imagining" what I can
do or guessing what I might be able to do with the superb OpenOffice suite!

I happen to be a seasoned software integrator and long time user a vigorous
supporter in my personal sphere of experience. I hope these opinions help the
project. <goldr...@optonline.net>
