It happens quite a bit on some drivers (typically the proprietary ones like
nvidia) that there's bustage with opengl. Running glxgears often shows the same
problems. The better workaround for OOo is generally export SAL_NOOPENGL=true.
AFAIK in 3.1 we won't ask opengl any hard questions anymore, which'll have the
side effect of hiding the broken opengl implementations bugs from OOo
