Yes, I think that's it! I have checked it with 2 files that originally caused problems. In both, the problem disappears instantly when I break all picture links. Interestingly, the problem also disappears if I open the problematic file in read-only mode. It might, however, as well be a timing problem. I should note that both machines on which I tried it are about 5 years old.
