(emphasis added) is not that obvious I think, at least not for me.  While some
symbols need to be consistently bound to a single instance (e.g., mutable data,
functions for which the address is taken) others need not (e.g., vtables).  In
my understanding, whether symbolic binding is sound is not bound to functions
vs. data (it just appears that it is seldom unsound with functions and more
frequently unsound with data, so that -Bsymbolic is not used routinely while
-Bsymbolic-functions often appears to work fine).
