According to the Wikipedia, the .CDR file format is patented to some degree. This can be an obstacle in implementing certain features, mostly on the export side - for proper information, more research is needed. From the viewpoint of raising ODF awareness and standardization, the export filter for .CDR can have even a negative effect.
