seeing how this works inside gdk I think we need some more checks;
monitors-changed will also be called in a non Xinerama case; in this case it
would be not so good if we filled m_aXineramaScreens and pretended Xinerama when
actually a screen has been added (and not just the root window of the one screen
reconfigured).

I must confess I'm a little unclear as to how well RandR and XINERAMA play
together; AFAIK you can have either xinerama and monitors will all be on one
screen or you can have distinct screens. In the latter case it is unclear to me
whether the screen count and structures will actually be updated in the Xlib
Display structure.
