I use Ooo on Ubuntu and the selection of text is the one feature that constantly drives me bonkers. I also remember it happening on Windows. It seems illogical that, when selecting the word at the end of a line, the selection should extend past the end of the line. This should be a subsequent selection step, or use the Shift-Down combination (which it already does!)
