I heard the hard drive churning, but it didn't do anything. I tried again, and nothing happened. After a bit of frustration, I Alt+Tabbed and saw a spreadsheet icon in the list. I switched to that, and it was a little dialog box called "OpenOffice Improvement Program", with no window list button. The first thing you could do to improve OpenOffice is to remove this dialog and make it into an unobtrusive notification balloon.
