Otherwise references within the same row would expand vertically. A "calculated field" X2 =A2+B2 may become =A2:A3+B2:B3 or something like that. It's just an annoyance that you have to define a new db-range with a dummy record below the header, since this option is most useful with database-like lists. IMHO, all database ranges should behave like this automatically whereas any other cell range should behave as normal.
