------- Additional comments from wa...@openoffice.org Wed Jul 1 03:15:09 +0000 2009 ------- I have Windows XP Professional on a Dell GX270 computer with a 3 Ghz processor, and 2 Gigs of RAM. I have extreme high speed internet service. I have the latest version of Java - tested and working. Issue #1: When I try to download OpenOffice, I get download speeds of 8 to 17 kb/second with projected downloading times of 2.5 to 5.5 hours. The mirrors close to me are equally as slow. Why is this so slow? I know it is a large file, but 8 to 17 kb/second? I called my ISP provider, who tested my system and said it was working fine. I did a speed test and it worked fine. I have never had any other application download so slow. What is going on? Issue#2: I did manage to download one full version, although it was not from the home page site, or any of its listed mirrors, but from a third party site. The name of the file I downloaded was: OOo_3.1.0_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe When I click on this exe file to run, it gives a message that the file cannot be opened because it is not a valid Win32 Application. Thus, it does not install. This is the second issue. I have worked on this for a solid day (evening included). I tried shutting off my virus checker (AVG 8.5) and antispyware (Spybot Teatime) as well as my Windows firewall - and tried installing it again, to no avail. Same message. I tried downloading it with both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Same problem with both. I tried downloading it with another computer. Just as slow. I tried making sure there were no profiles for me from an earlier installation of OpenOfficePortable (which I uninstalled because I did not like it. It hesitated when I clicked on some functions and seemed too erratic). By the way - uninstalling all of this program was a nightmare. This took me several hours all by itself. (Why doesn't it come with an uninstaller, that takes out its protected files?). I tried looking on the internet (with many different search engines) for the cause and solution of these two issues - to no avail. I tried going into your volunteer forums to find answers, but some had pages and pages of posts, but they had no search function to. It would have taken me days to read all the posts individually, so I gave up on the forums. The ones I did read regarding installation problems did not specifically address these two issues, and I tried following every suggestion provided (in general, for installation problems)- to no avail. So I registered to query the issues, but I can't figure out how. Why is this site so user-unfriendly, and answers to such problems so deeply buried? Can you understand my saying that I am getting very fed-up and am about to just abandon the whole idea of using OpenOffice? Warm1 (who is not feeling so warm at the present moment).
