I have been putting some thought into this question. I am now of the opinion
that conversion during update has little to do with this bug. It seems to
entirely center around autocorrect entries created using cut-and-paste to fill
the fields or [highlightword]--Tools-->Aurocorrect options to pop in the "with"
field.

I had some entries created those ways in my ver 3.0.1 setup, and they worked
fine for months and months, wrote a whole book using them. After upgrading to
3.1.0, they became corrupted at some point. I cannot say for sure that it was
during the install process, but I immediately noticed the problem with hyphen
converting to long dash. I tried a lot of things to no avail, thrashed through
the forums and came up with other similar complaints and what they had done to
work around it. I sat down and located ALL offending entries in my table, and
the problem went away.

My suspicion is that (as crazy as it seems) version 3.1 has a problem with
accepting autocorrect table entries created any way other than manual typing.
Looking back in the application history documented by the various user forums,
the problem seems to have existed under 2.4, was magically healed under 3.0, and
came back with 3.1

New suggestion for replication:
(1) Type the word "aaTestProblem" in the body of some OO Writer document. Don't
save the document; leave it in open, modified state. Double-click the word to
highlight it. Go to Tools-->Autocorrect options. The word should already appear
in the "with" field. Type "aa" in the "replace" field and click on "new" then
"OK" Back in the text body, type [space]aa[space]. On my system, "aa" does not
get converted to aaTestProblem; it remains as aa.
(2) Type the word "abTestProblem" in the text body. got to Tools-->Autocorrect
options. Highlight the contents of the "with" field and use shift-insert to
paste the word there. Highlight the contents of the "replace" field and type
"ab", click "new" then "OK"
(3)Play with it a little bit. Try hyphen conversion to dash; it likely will not
work normally. "-->" and "<--" likely will not convert at all. Those three
symptoms seem to be the easiest to reproduce reliably. "aa" and "ab" may work
for a while, or may not work immediately after you create them; it seems to be
more or less random. If you carry on working, using the software, go back to
Tools-->Autocorrect options from time to time. At some point the "with" fields
will show up blank for one or both entries. At any time, you can delete or
manually retype the "aa" and "ab" table entries. Hyphen, --> and <-- will
immediately resume working normally.
