This holds especially true on Gnome. If you terminate the network connection via Network Manager then Gnome will notice the change and work correctly, so will OOo. If the connection is unexpectedly interrupted (also when just stopping/killing related services you have this behavior. And as said above: 6 seconds are not particularly slow.
