A final comment from me before closing:
When cutting the network connection on a Linux box you will observe a slowdown
in many areas. This holds especially true on Gnome. If you terminate the network
connection via Network Manager then Gnome will notice the change and work
correctly, so will OOo. If the connection is unexpectedly interrupted (also when
just stopping/killing related services you have this behavior. And as said
above: 6 seconds are not particularly slow.
Performance optimizations are done in the performance project context which
ultimately will accelerate the application but probably not for the sitation
described within this issue.
