A lot of them won't discover it and others will be too confused to use it, or use it incorrectly. IMHO there should be an interface to set this like in any number of other programs. They present a list of common extensions and offer options to 'associate all', 'clear all associations' and checkbox to allow you to select the ones you wish to have associated.
