@schaber - Well it isn't actually a work around, it is as designed by the HSQLdb
project team.

With the Base file opened and connected. (meaning you need to enter the table
section or be displaying data in a form)

Open menu item: Tools>SQL

Enter, and execute, the command: SHUTDOWN COMPACT

You will need to close the Base file at this point - the blank lines are removed
from any attached text files.

So I could say this is as designed or WORKSFORME and call this more a support
query - but instead

@schaber - I hope you don't mind if I use your entry of this issue as a specific
use case for a more generalized issue.

"Update in text table creates blank lines" is just one instance of when users
need a compact command, to reclaim space in cached tables is another.

Currently the user must use either the CHECKPOINT DEFRAG or SHUTDOWN COMPACT
command in the SQL window. The latter command is required to purge blank lines
from attached text table files and then requires the user to close the Base 
file.

My suggestion would be to add a new item to the task list under Tables with the
string:
Compact

A description entry of:
This operation shrinks all files to the minimum size.

Clicking on the task item would:
close any open component windows (forms, dataviews, etc) 
execute the SHUTDOWN COMPACT command for the active connection
reconnect the active connection
