Looking at the way 3D shapes render those gradients, and also how the whole rest of the world (including native implementations in graphics APIs) does it, lets me favor the procedural texture approach vs. the single-line-in-the-center-generating, polygon scaling version. The latter is badly legacy; fortunately ODF does not restrict the actual rendering in any way, so we should be fairly free to change it.
