I believe this is related to having notes on captions in .odt files. Notes float at the top of each page and are not connected to the point where the note was made (there are the dashed lines but they don't connect anywhere). Any caption which had a note on it, no longer appears, and trying to add a caption again causes the program to crash. I have not been able to recreate this.
