When you sort via the sort icon, Calc always assume the first row as the header row *if* all cells in the first row are text. Therefore, it excludes the first row from sorting. You have two ways to get it to work the way you want: 1) Add a header row, to give each column a name, or 2) Sort via Data - Sort from the menu, which brings up the Sort dialog.
