@PL: You are right that the dialog is the only UI we _currently_ have to offer.
So no change in what we've discussed so far.

But, the problem is quite usual... To explain it a bit more abstract, let's have
a look at the "10 Levels of Automation of Decision and Action Selection" by
Sheridan and Verplank used for automated system like computers [1]. The modal
dialog is more or less Level 2 (without even providing alternatives), my the
mockups I referred to are rather Level 6.

Example: The user has a spreadsheet with information, although he currently
selected an empty sheet. He presses the toolbar icon "Print File Directly" and
the information bar (see mockup link in a previous comment) pops up for 15
seconds, offering an explanation and the following choices: Print the whole
document (thus, the other sheets), open the print dialog (to manually select the
range) or to cancel. If the user does not react, simply cancel and remove the
information bar. Basically, he is not forced to do anything - but we also give
him some choices.

In OOo, we mostly use levels 2 ... 3 for the interaction which could be solved
by 2 ... 7 - and that why some users usually complain about the high effort in
OOo in comparison with other software. But as I said, just for discussion -
without questioning the current "modal dialog" decision.
