At the moment, open office does not support any standard vector format usable under Linux. Many scientific applications can output into svg or eps, but as these formats are unusable in openoffice, it is really hard to use impress for giving a talk. If you walk around in scientific institutions like CERN, half of the people are using Mac's Keynote, just because the presentations look better. I really think openoffice should make an effort to support displaying either svg or eps. I also think many of the voters for issue 2497 actually didn't mean importing but displaying, which would be the most important thing. Furthermore, it seems unlikely to me, that the svg import filter will ever support things like latex formulas. Is this really so difficult to implement?
