We have excellent success with this approach except for this attached document. Unfortunately, this document is in widepread use amongst our users. When viewed, the document shows a large white box which appears to hover over the document. This white box is not movable nor deletable. Workaround: If I 'select all' and paste into a new writer document I can remove this white box and the document then appears quite close to the MS rendering. Unfortunately, this isn't a particularly good workaround as there are thousands of copies of this document in our system. 2nd workaround: If I open this document in Word 2007 and 'save as' docx format, the box disappears when viewed in OO.
