I have observed that it is minimized by clicking the top drop down list value then dragging down to the wanted list value then releasing the mouse button. It seems to me that it is much less likely to slip up to the list value immediately above the one chosen when selecting this way. Problem is I would need to communicate my technique to other users and that is not always possible.
