Note on the root cause:
If the writer is configured to show two pages (book view) it depends on the size
of the appklication window whether one or two pages are shown - if there is room
enough both pages will be displayed, otherwise there will be only one.
If the document only contains one page, it is displayed to the left of the
application window leaving the right half as a grey "dead" area.
So the solution must be
1) Switch to single page mode
2) Scale to page width (in case the scaling factor is too small we only have a
tiny little "stamp" in the upper middle of the application window.
