It doesn't just control where the text goes, but it essentially crops or masks the picture as well. In terms of useability it would be simpler and more logical to separate the cropping or "contouring" of the image from the text wrapping. When someone cropped/contoured an image to an irregular shape they could then choose from the normal wrapping options - "through", "parallel", etc. 2. This feature is so useful that it should be available in the other applications, not just Writer...
