This has the unfortunate result that it's no longer possible to select the VCL plugin to use just by setting SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN: it's necessary to set OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP too (but I suppose that could have other effects too). My specific use case is plain WM (Blackbox) and Oo.o with the gtk VCL plugin. I understand the current code works well for most users, hence the lower priority.
