So I guess it seems to be a problem of the version supplied with the
distribution
the reporter himself tells "However, the Linux version I use does not support
the possibility of saving files in the Word 97/2000/XP format since all files
saved in this format effectively will be in the Word95-format instead"
And this is only a behaviour of the/his Suse version
