Ok, I found one way to make this problem repeatable, there may be more and I'll
post those if I find them.

1) Open up OOO, create a new spreadsheet and put some data into it. I just
filled 8 columns and 300 rows with the same data on each line/row.

2) select a few columns (I selected two) by clicking on the letter at the top of
one column and dragging to the letter at the top of the column to its right.

3) create a new text document

4) select the "paste special" command (command-shift-v) and then hit the "u" key
to select "unformatted text".

5) Welcome to beach-ball city.

It might crash even with regular paste, I'm not sure.

Another thing that annoys me about the cut/copy/paste feature of ooo is that I
have to "paste special - unformatted text" into an ooo text document at all
before I can copy the data to TextWrangler because otherwise it combines all the
columns into one. That's another issue though.
