This issue however does not seem to be Xalan related becasue if do the transformation manually eg. copy the "OpenOffice.org 1.9.93\program\classes\xalan.jar" and related packages to c:\ and run C:\>java -classpath "c:\xalan.jar;c:\xml-apis.jar;c:xercesImpl.jar" org.apache.xalan.xslt.Process -in fonttest.xml -xsl fonttest.xsl -out fonttestout.xml the resulting fonttestout.xml file is outputted correctly and has no invalid characters.
