For OOo 3.2, this has been worked around, by invalidating to-be-painted controls (in alive mode) all the time. This made the user-perceived problem disappear, but now controls (grid controls, at least) flicker when repainted. This can nicely be seen by simply dragging some small floating window over an alive grid control.
