------- Additional comments from diee...@openoffice.org Tue Mar 2 08:57:04 +0000 2010 ------- Hi, I realize styles already are a satisfying solution to the problem this issue talks about. Anyhow, the way it works now doesn't ever get in the way of the user, which is good for those who know what they're doing but prevents new users to learn how to use styles (and to do stuff, to some extent). I guess many users don't even know about styles' existence, let alone understand what *page* styles can do. Moreover, using styles requires the user a bit of computer-like thinking, which probably means the actual solution doesn't "scale down" very well to newbies. I mean, for someone who just needs to compute some small numbers then print a detailed view on an A3 page and a shorter summary on an A4 one, OOo could be overkill if managing to print it takes 10 times the effort of creating the spreadsheet in the first place. I may be repeating myself, but what I mean is: getting in the way of the new user and teaching him/her how to do basic things may be a good idea. As an example, when first formatting a page (that is, modifying the predefined page layout), OOo could ask the user if he/she wants those changes applied to the whole document (that's not correct, but if someone doesn't know about styles the concept applies) or only that single page, maybe offering to create a new layout. The user could be provided a choice to "not show again" the message/popup/dialog/whatever is informing him/her about page layouts. ..should these tips become too many to handle one at a time (in some distant future?) OOo could provide a config option to enable/disable all of them globally, sort of a beginner/expert mode choice. I see what I'm proposing is out of scope in respect to this specific issue, but I see it as a possible evolution and like to hear other people's points of view. Sorry for the long post and many thank to anybody taking the time to read and think about this! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
