There's lot of confidential info in my original database, so I made a copy of the tables and put in some new data. And it worked correctly on that database, as it is on yours. Then I looked at the original database again and the definition of the format of the field. And it had changed (without my touching it - honestly) from English £ to USA $. Changing it back to £ gave the correct result. So I think we'll have to close it as unrepeatable.
