The on-screen display actually comes on and displays the current volume, but pressing volume-up or volume-down has no effect. What also doesn't work if OOo is active are the Fn+arrowkeys combinations which on my laptop access the media player and tells it to play/pause(Fn+down-arrow), stop (Fn+up), or play the previous/next track (Fn+left/right).
