There is no algorithm in 3D which can correctly decide in that case which points are 'in front' of the others. Changing issue type accordingly. The second view is that there is code in the office to automatically do what regina suggests as workaround; it comes into play when more than a single colored area gets converted to 3D. I will have to check why this code does not react to Your example.
