Unfortunately I nor any of my customers have 3.3 dev. The way I've gotten around this problem is to copy Impress 2.4 onto the machines that need this functionality and use 2.4 to just print the handouts (don't save in 2.4). It works beautifully; the page numbers print AND the handout layout is maintained, resized slides and all! It's a clumsy way to get around this bug but not any clumsier than your solution.
