1) File > New > Text Document
2) View > Nonprinting characters: OFF
3) Open the attached document--initial page render is very fast (<<1s)
4) View > Nonprinting characters: ON
To repaint the page showing the nonprinting characters takes ~15s here.

Scrolling, changing the view/zoom, etc. are all very slow--unusable I think many
would say.

OOo 3.2 renders this document almost instantly in both cases, with or without
non-printing characters.

The problem seems to be the tab characters: changing them all to space (or
no-break space) returns Writer to normal responsiveness with this document.
