In a table cell, you input only a number between parentheses, such as "(3)" or
"(47)", this is automatically converted to the negative value without
parentheses, such as "-3" or "-47", as soon as you move the cursor to another
place in the document. This is an undesired behaviour, and i can't figure out
how to impede it. I have encountered the problem on both the Mac and Linux.

There is a similar issue with a number followed by a period, such as "3.". On my
Mac, the period is removed when i move the cursor, while in Linux (where i might
be running a slightly older version of OOo) the number is converted to something
that looks like a date, in the format "03.04.10", but oddly, it is not today's
date.

This seems to have something to do with data display format, but i can't figure
out how to change it. If the display format is set to "text", the problem still
arises.
