2010 -------
Currently, if you want to replace a cross-references, you must delete it and 
re-enter it entirely.
If would be easier if clicking with a modifier key, or choosing a command from 
the context-menu, would 
let you go to the Insert > Cross-reference dialogue again, with the current 
target selected. Here, you 
could choose a different target, that might be the nearest one.
