There have been enough other issues marked as duplicate - this would seem to indicate that it is a desired fix. It seems like it is not a high enough priority, either. This is a MAJOR problem to anyone creating lengthy documents that contain references to figures, tables, etc. We've encountered this problem again, and now have to go through and create named references for each of the hundreds of tables and figures, and replace the current table/figure references to use the named ones.
