The mouse still moves the cursor and the keyboard still can be used to navigate menus. Closing the Office applications does not resolve the problem - mouse clicks still not captured even with the office application closed. Disconnecting and reconnecting the usb mouse (once OpenOffice is closed) or loggin off and logging back into does correct the issue.
