It seems there was a misunderstanding. I now understand that the problem is that
the font inside the control is not shown (whereas I understood you had
characters outside the control that were not showing).

The "missing" font however is due to the fact that nowadays we use the font set
on the control instead of straight "Helvetica". This is the behavior introduced
by enhancement issue 42985 and works as designed; for that to work you need
however the used font on the target system that you display the PDF on (in the
case of your PDF "Liberation Sans").
