I am using the latest version of Ubuntu "Lucid Lynx 10.04 and I assume the
latest
OPEN OFFICE which is supplied with that O/S...This is my problem...

OK I download and copy a PDF document to the desktop..File size = 3.3MB.

I send this file to "Calibre", where the file size is confirmed as = 3.32MB.

Calibre converts the file to RTF..and the file size is now shown as = 1.87MB. (
which is fair enough. )

When I click onto the blue RTF..the file automatically opens in "Open Office
Word Processor...File size = 1.87MB

( everything is still OK....BUT !)

When in Open Office I click "SAVE AS" and send the file back to the desktop the
RTF becomes a huge = 13.0 MB

When I convert the same file to TXT...it now reads = 0.50 MB.

When I click onto the blue TXT, the file, Calibre automatically opens in
"Abiword." and file size when saved to desktop = 515.6 KB

While still in ABIWORD should I save that same file in RTF instead of TXT ...the
file size now shows= 2.7MB

Q. What is Open Office doing to my files that causes such a huge difference in
completed file size?

The reason why I am making these conversions is that my e-book reader will not
handle PDF...Hence I prefer to convert to RTF...but the huge end file destroys
that pleasure.
Please advise what I am doing wrong....Thank you
