I have just discovered Open office, and have been using MS Word 2007, which
serves me well, but I will be using OO on one of my computers rather than MSW
and maybe eventually on all.

One of my tasks is editing for a writer who uses OO exclusively. I use the
compare feature extensively to find out what he has changed since my last
edit. I am finding your compare feature less user friendly than Bill Gates'
version, although some of that is simply my need to get used to yours. But I
see some specific issues that I think are built into your system and are not
just about my inexperience.

When I open a base document (original) and compare to a revised document
(update) the markup comes out reversed. in other words what was in the update
and not in the original shows as deletion. It should show as and addition. That
happened to me once. I need to experiment some more to be sure that was not
just a problem with how I set it up, but I don't think so.

Second, I have found that if there are significant punctuation, formatting, and
spacing differences but text differences are only occasional, one version
appears in its entirety first, then the other in its entirety, showing the
corrections to spacing and format, but really defeating the purpose of text
comparison. The only way to fix this is to correct the formatting prior to
doing the compare, which is tedious and time consuming. The compare feature in
Bill's version aligns text differences throughout even when formatting is
different throughout. This is a real time saver in Word 2007. It is a little
awkward for me because I need to move everything from OO to MSW, edit, then put
it back in OO.

Other than that, I like OO better and I've only been using it for a few days.

I am not a programmer so I can't help with the fix directly – even if you
decide my concern has merit. If you send me some situations you want me to
experiment with to check this out in greater depth, I'd be happy to help that
way.
