In fact, it's much worse than this.  With a custom number format (not very
complex - 1, 1.1, (a), (i)) I use it simply drops *all* subnumbering after the 
first

So:
1. text
1.1 text
<drops 1.2, 1.3 etc but keeps text>
2. text
2.1 text
(a) text
<drops (b), (c), etc but keeps text>
