dtardon should be able to check this on a fairly recent distribution, so I'll
move it over to him

This can be checked by clicking hyperlinks in a writer document like
mail:f...@foo.com or http://www.somewhere.or other and making sure the right
helper app starts up. And that if xdg-open/xdg-email doesn't exist or horribly
fails that we continue onwards to try gnome-open/email instead

The xdg-* family are basically more generic than the gnome-open bunch. xdg-*
will actually just call gnome-* if running under gnome but will try other more
specific options if running under say xfce

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=598052 is an example of where
someone running under xfce gets gnome-open called, where it is desirable to use
xdg-open.
