I'm pretty sure it's a comma, but I'm not breaking another db to kill it.

Anyway, I create a query and name it - but with a comma in the name.  Save it,
then try to open Tables and I get the error that soffice.bin ended in an
unspecified manner, and I can never open the tables again.

It's happened about 12 times!
