I want to produce a simple Pilot table of the count of different answers to a
survey question. The count for each answer is correct except for the empty
cells (no response to the question): the Pilot table has a row labeled
"(empty)"
but the corresponding count is empty.

Step-by-step:
In an empty Calc sheet, enter the following ten items in column A.
Answer
Yes
No

Yes
Yes
No
Yes

No
(That's a title, 4 Yeses, 3 Nos, and 2 blank cells.)
Select A1:A10. Choose Data|DataPilot|Start. Click OK in Select Source for
Current Selection.
Drag the Answer button to the Row Fields area and then drag it to the Data
Fields area. Click Options, change the function to Count, and click OK.
Click More, then pull down "new sheet" for Results. Do not check "Ignore empty
rows."
Click OK to generate the Pilot table. The result is
Answer
(empty)
No 3
Yes 4
Total Result 7

This is incorrect: (empty) should be 2, for a total of 9.

I will be happy to attach a spreadsheet in which I followed these steps.

Sincere apologies in advance if I have misunderstood what the "empty" category
means.
