These dialogs can display a collection of links to "folders" (locations, places, connections, favorites, ...). Clicking such a link displays the content of the folder behind the link in the file browser area of the file dialog. Means, these file dialogs offer quick entry points (shortcuts) for "important" locations. Neat feature. The OOo built-in file dialog misses such a feature.
